PERIOD: all year round.
Dreaming of experiencing the Glacier Express? For a weekend, climb aboard the most famous and beautiful of the Swiss panoramic trains.
MONTREUX
Book a flight or train to Montreux upon request. (Direct train: Paris > Lausanne in 3h40 with the TGV Lyria).
Arrive individually in Lausanne. From Lausanne, begin your train journey in Switzerland along the Lac Léman for 25 minutes to Montreux. Settle in at your hotel. Montreux is known for its Jazz Festival and its relaxed way of life. Stroll along its Riviera, lined with palm trees and magnificent mansions facing the lake. Enjoy your day by visiting Chillon Castle. Easily accessible by foot or even by boat, it looks as if it came straight out of a fairy tale.
ZERMATT
Head for the heights: today will take you to Zermatt, at an altitude of 1600 m. At your convenience, take the Spiez – Brig – Zermatt connecting train. It will take you to this famous alpine resort in 2h30. The last part of your journey, between Visp and Zermatt, is especially picturesque: the Matterhorn-Gotthard railway line offers you a splendid view of the famous Mount Cervin (Matterhorn).
You arrive in Zermatt and check in to your hotel. Once you’re settled in this elegant winter sports resort, board the Gornergrat Bahn, the highest open-air cogwheel train in Europe. This 30-minute ride will take you to the summit of Mount Gornergrat. You’ll discover a panoramic view of dozens of peaks over 4,000 m high.
Return to Zermatt with the Gornergrat Bahn. Enjoy your free time in this car-free village nestled at the foot of the majestic Mount Cervin (Matterhorn).
COIRE
Your day is dedicated to the most famous of the Swiss panoramic trains: the Glacier Express. On board, you make a true crossing of the Alps, from glacier to glacier, in superior comfort.
The Glacier Express leaves Zermatt in the morning for a 5h30 journey to Saint Moritz. Since 1930, this exceptional train has crossed the Swiss Alps from West to East over 291 km, crossing bridges and tunnels, and reaching its highest point at the Oberalp Pass, at 2033 m.
Proud of its average speed of 36 km/h, the self-proclaimed “slowest express in the world” is one of Europe’s most exceptional trains. Its carriages with oversized windows allow you to fully enjoy the scenery. Meals (at additional cost on board) are served at your seat. French audio guides are available throughout the journey to provide you with information about the places you pass through.
You arrive in Chur around 2:30 pm and leave your Glacier Express panoramic train to settle into Switzerland’s oldest city: Chur was founded over 5,000 years ago. You’ll discover its episcopal castle and its three-nave cathedral.
ZURICH
After breakfast, take the regular train to Zurich in just 1h30. Make the most of your weekend exploring this beautiful city, captivating yet still little known as a tourist destination. Discover its medieval districts and enjoy the superb view it offers of the mountains and the lake. Visit Zurich’s main churches: St. Peter’s Church, whose clock face is one of the largest in Europe, and Fraümunster, illuminated by the colorful stained glass windows of Marc Chagall. Your train journey comes to an end.
