Self-Guided Tour of Germany

Your train journey to Germany starts early in the morning: your train leaves from Paris Gare du Nord for a 3-hour and 20-minute trip.

A selected hotel, not far from the station, has been reserved for you. From 2 p.m., your room at the hotel will be available, but you can already leave your luggage at the reception desk.

In the afternoon, discover Cologne, one of the oldest German cities. Founded over 2,000 years ago by the Romans, this city of Catholic tradition has preserved an exceptional historical heritage. Stroll through the old town and admire Cologne Cathedral, a 13th-century Catholic church listed by UNESCO. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Chocolate Museum. If you have time, you can also wander through the Belgian Quarter, known for its restaurants, souvenir shops, and galleries, as well as St. Michael’s Church.

Arrival of the train in Berlin in the afternoon. Check-in at the hotel (20 minutes on foot from the station).

After a quick (free) lunch, head to Friedrichstraße, one of the main arteries of the capital with plenty of restaurants and shops.

Free time for personal exploration of the city with the Berlin Welcome Card, the 48-hour Tourist Pass that allows you to use public transport and enjoy discounts at the city’s museums (skip-the-line included).

Admire the must-sees of the German capital: the Reichstag Palace, the Brandenburg Gate, the main avenue Unter den Linden or Alexanderplatz, where you’ll find the Berlin TV Tower, the tallest building open to the public in Europe. Go up to its observation deck for a 360-degree panoramic view over the whole city!

Visit the St. Nicholas Quarter, the oldest district in Berlin. Continue your walk to Gendarmenmarkt Square, famous for its architectural triptych of the two cathedrals (German and French—Deutscher and Französischer Dom) and the renowned Konzerthaus concert hall. End your day at Potsdamer Platz, one of the most modern areas of the city. Walk under the immense dome of glass and steel at the Sony Center, lit up by changing colored lights.

Continue exploring this fascinating city. There are still so many things to see, such as the Pergamon Archaeological Museum located on Museum Island, the DDR Museum featuring a collection of everyday life and pop culture objects from East Germany during the Cold War, as well as the Museum of Modern Art. Urban art lovers will certainly appreciate the East Side Gallery, a remnant of the Berlin Wall, most of which was destroyed in 1990.

Early afternoon, departure on your train journey to Dresden (2 hours and 9 minutes trip).

You have time to visit Dresden’s historic center. Unmissable sights include: the Zwinger Palace, a world-famous Baroque masterpiece, the Semperoper, an opera house and one of the city’s symbols, and the Lutheran Church of Our Lady of Dresden.

Daytime departure by train to Frankfurt am Main (4 hours and 24 minutes journey) in the afternoon.

Free visit of Frankfurt. The gateway to Europe, unlike the small historic towns, this international city enchants with its blend of old buildings and skyscrapers. You’ll pass by the Römerberg, the central square of the medieval district, admire St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, the city’s largest religious building, constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries. If you have time, you can go up to the top of the Main Tower, the only skyscraper open to the public, offering a beautiful panoramic view of the city. Goethe enthusiasts, Germany’s most famous writer, can visit his home (Goethe-Haus).

Return to Paris by day train (3 hours and 45 minutes journey).
