Dalarna by Train: Journey Through Swedish Traditions

Enjoy your first evening discovering Gamla Stan, the medieval old town with its cobblestone alleys, colorful facades, and lively squares like Stortorget. Stroll through its streets, soak in its unique atmosphere, and explore its artisanal shops.

In the morning, departure by regular Swedish train to the city of Falun, crossing varied landscapes: lakes, meadows, forests, and the typical red villages of Dalarna.

Upon arrival, visit the famous Falun Copper Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guided tour takes you nearly 70 meters underground, through an impressive network of tunnels where you will discover mining history and local legends. On the surface, the gigantic reddish crater called the Stora Stöten is a testament to a spectacular collapse.

The adjacent museum traces the industrial and cultural history of the region, as well as the production of the “faluröd” red paint, a symbol of Swedish houses.

Continue your exploration of Dalarna by train. Head to Mora, on the shores of Lake Siljan, formed by an ancient meteorite impact. Mora is the picturesque starting point of the Inlandsbanan train, an iconic railway line that traverses the vast wilderness of northern Sweden.

Stroll through the town center, between the church and streets lined with red houses. Visit the Zorn Museum, dedicated to the painter Anders Zorn, a major figure in Swedish art. His works, as well as his home and workshop, evoke rural life in Dalarna and his attachment to light and local traditions.

In the afternoon, you can take a walk to Zorngården or along the Siljansleden cycling trail, which offers magnificent views of the surrounding hills and flower-filled meadows. The air is pure, often cool even in summer, and the sky’s reflections on the lake change throughout the day.

In just 30 minutes, you will reach probably the prettiest village in the region, Tällberg. Perched on a hill, it offers spectacular views of Lake Siljan and the surrounding mountains. The village is famous for its traditional red wooden houses with grass roofs, flower-filled gardens, and peaceful atmosphere.

Tällberg is also a place of culture and tradition, where midsummer festivities are still celebrated with music, dancing, and regional costumes. Walks along the trails surrounding the village allow you to soak in the silence, the wind in the pines, and the ever-changing panorama over the lake—deep blue in the morning, golden at sunset.
